In November 2019, I took a flight from Brussels to Cancun (Mexico), and while searching for something unique to do, I found the Temazcal ceremony. Still, I didn't have enough time to do it in Cancun. Then I flew to Mexico City, met with friends there, and started to talk about it. They said it was a fantastic experience, so I decided to try it. After three days, I flew back to Cancun then I drove to Playa del Carmen. I found a place offering this ceremony near the hotel where I stayed, so I booked it online for the next day.
Once I arrived there, a Mexican woman opened the gate for me, and there was another young girl who did massage me after the ceremony and another Three young guys. One was the shaman who led the ceremony, and the others were two assistants.
The shaman started the ceremony by talking about major philosophical problems like the creation of the universe, the purpose of life, and the afterlife. It wasn't a one-way conversation; I told him my point of view about it, and After this exciting conversation, we started the central part of our ceremony.
So what is the Temazcal Ceremony and its history? And what are the steps involved in the ceremony, and what are the benefits of it?
Introduction to the Temazcal ceremony
The Temazcal ceremony is an ancient indigenous Mexican healing ritual that uses steam to cleanse the body and soul. The Nahuatl term teocalli, which means "house of heat," is whence the word temazcal originates. The Temazcal ceremony is founded on the idea that heated rocks and plants can release purifying steam that can assist the body and spirit. The ritual is frequently done to cleanse the body after an illness or prepare for a challenging life event.
The history and origins of the Temazcal
Before the arrival of the Spanish, the Aztecs and other indigenous peoples of Mexico used the Temazcal for millennia. The Temazcal is a small, dome-shaped structure made of adobe or stone, with a small door or opening at the top. Inside, there is a small fire pit where hot rocks are placed. Water is poured over the stones to create steam, and the person entering the Temazcal sits on a bench, often covered with a blanket. The heat and steam help to cleanse the body and relax the mind. The Temazcal is still used in many parts of Mexico for traditional purposes and as a tourist attraction. Many believe that the Temazcal can help purify the body and soul, often used as a part of traditional healing ceremonies.
The steps involved in the Temazcal ceremony
A shaman or a medicine man typically leads the Temazcal ceremony in a small, domed structure made from adobe or stone, and it feels like a sauna or steam bath. Participants enter the Temazcal naked and sit on the floor, where they are covered with a blanket and given a cup of herbal tea to drink. The ceremony leader will then begin to heat rocks in a fire outside the Temazcal, and when they are hot enough, they will be brought inside and placed in the center of the room. Water is poured over the rocks to create steam, and the participants will sweat profusely as the temperature rises. After around 20 minutes, the door of the Temazcal is opened, and participants are allowed to leave. They will then take a cold shower or swim in a lake or river. The Temazcal ceremony is frequently used to prepare for significant life events like marriage or childbirth since it is believed to cleanse the body and soul.
